The music movement that began with Bo Diddley and in stages separated into myriad styles like grunge, pop rock and punk that have dominated the last fifty years or s o of popular westerly music is heavily dependent on the guitar. Although the list of famous performers is an exhaustive one, the two names that really stand out are Jimi Hendrix and Buddy guy wire, for their innovativeness and their endure impact on pop culture. The creativity of the two artistes might be rooted in the fact that neither received any formal training. Thatchers Britain Essay Example for Free

Thatchers Britain EssayThe text that we claim been studying in Drama is Willy Russells Blood Br opposites. Willy Russell was born in Whiston, near Liverpool, England, in 1947. I weigh that his upbringing that he had, and his social and economic circumstances greatly abnormal the writing of Blood Brothers. He was brought up in a poor area, in a poor family that was tempered by the government really badly. We hot seated Willy Russell and found taboo a lot ab off(p) him. We found step up that he was the author of Blood Brothers and that his parents and how they behaved greatly influenced the play because of his running(a) class background. We then went on to find out that he studied Literature at school and achieved an O level in the subject, the only grade that he achieved in schooling. He hated Thatchers Britain because he had strong views on the working classes attempts to take a shit access to middle-class culture, he believed that every per boy should be treated the sam e no matter what their financial state. He believed that Margaret Thatcher helped the rich and made vivification difficult for the poor. These views that he had greatly affected his writing because in every play that he wrote, the poor were displayed to be courageous and battling even though they were treated badly, and the rich to have the easy life with not a care in the world and look down on the lower class. The second assign that helped us to understand the play to a great extent was when the workshop developed to the point where we were able to build the two different households. The first household that we had to build was the Johnston house. We had to gestate more close to what we were going to put into the house because of the poor background that the family had. They couldnt be extravagant and had to have a cheap, rough looking sofa, a filthy unfashionable carpet and a big, old TV set. This really helped us to understand the economic issues that the Johnston family had by just letting our minds get wind what their home was like. You could forthwith see that they couldnt afford much and the social affect of being a single mother with only one salary coming into the family really affected them. The theme that ran their functions was that of great poverty. When we built the Lyon family house, it was a completely different story. Big, long dining table, crystal glasses and even a piano in the recessThe Lyon family was obviously the rich family of the play and they could afford to splash out on things because they had money. Hot seating Mrs Johnston really helped me to understand what life was really like for her she struggled as a mother and provider and felt unloved and unappreciated by her rowdy family. We asked her if she was proud of her home, she said yes because everything in it, she had paid for herself and that made her savour very proud, almost as if she had achieved something. When we sculpted the still images inside both the families, this helped us all to understand the relationships between the characters. In the Johnston image, all the children were close to each other and argued in a playful way showing affection and love towards on another. It was loud with excitement about the Reverend coming round for tea, and the hebdomadary treat of Fish and Chips. Whereas in the Lyon house, the three genus Phalluss of the family were silent while eating their dinner and only spoke when they snapped at each other. The mother sat circumferent to the child and the father sat at the opposite end of the table, showing a greater more affectionate bond between the mother and son than between father and son. When thought tracking these still images, we were able to find out what the characters really thought about the situation that they were in. Nearly every member in the Johnston household was happy with their poverty-ridden life because they had love and trust. In the Lyons household there was a great divide between the fami ly and the constant arguments and father working away had pushed a barrier between them all. They felt unable to love on another, they only felt anger. As you can see, the influences that Willy Russell had and his own beliefs really have affected this play.He has made the Johnston family that of a loving, courageous family that makes each moment of their life count. Contrastively, in the Lyon household, the author has portrayed the family of that of a over paid, worthless family that has more money than sense. After exploring the text in more depth than just reading it, I feel like I now know a lot more about it and really can understand the thought process that Willy Russell went through when he was writing it. I can clearly see the evidence that made him write the play like he has, and can easily pick out the influences he put into the play from his own life. From victimization role reversal on the stage setting were the two boys meet for the first time, I have gained an extra und erstanding of the relationship of the boys. From changing the mother to Mrs Lyons kind of of Mrs Johnston really changed the whole scene greatly. The boys relationship when they first meet really expands they meet and discover that they have the same birthday. For any young boy, meeting a person that has the same birthday as you is amazing, you feel connected to the person because birth is a special thingWhen they become Blood Brothers you really feel the connection between the two and how strongly they are now feeling or their brother. In this scene there is a great show of pedigree when Mickey teaches Eddie his new favourite word. It shows the great divide between the two classes due to Thatchers Britain. When Mrs Lyons come in and discovers the two boys, we improvised that she would become really black with the boys for ever meeting. We decided that this was because she was petrified that Mr Lyons would find out about her never having a child.Next comes the character of Linda. When she discovers later on in the play that Eddie loves her even though she is married to Mickey, what were her feelings? This I what we set out to find out. By using the explorative strategy of Devil/Angel we were able to do this. We found out that she cared greatly for her husband Mickey, but wanted more than she had achieved in her life. She then thought that he only way she would be able to do this was by dating Eddie. We found that she was really very confused because she didnt know which man she wanted more. She had a house and children with Mickey, but wanted to live up to greater things with Eddie. I believe that she had these feelings because she thought that rich Eddie had the easy, carefree life of a rich person in 1980s Britain and she wouldnt have to worry anymore about her financial ways. Basically she wanted out of her poverty ridden life of being Mrs Johnston. At the end of the play, after the meeting between Linda and Mickey after she has been out to lunch with Ed die, we developed the feelings of Mickey as he travelled to the Lyon household.WE did this by using the explorative strategy of a conscience alley. We discovered that the main thoughts change of location trough Mickeys mind were those of hatred and a want for revenge towards Eddie because of the fact that he had cheated on him with his wife. We then continued to look at the scene when Eddie meets the maddened Mickey at his house. We marked out four important scenes, which we felt were bit points in the scene. These point were 1. When Mickey first gets to the Lyon household 2. When he pulls out the gun on Eddie and asks him who has the power3. When he reveals that the gun was actually a fake 4. When he pours his heart out to Eddie about the situation of him and his wife We chose these scene because they pitch the different aspects of the final scene, they have nearly all of the feelings of Mickey in them. Love towards Eddie, hatred, the want for revenge all of them. On further dev elopment, and turning the still images into a crime report. I personally discovered that the boys deep down really cared for each other and that neither of them wanted to hurt the other. When I wrote and performed my soliloquy of Linda, I really had to focus on the Angel/Devil exercise and the feelings that she had towards each character. I decided that she would be more devastated about the outrage of her husband than that of her friend. I thought that she would blame Eddie and herself for Mickeys death because if they had never gone to lunch, Mickey would never have gone over to the Lyon household with the feelings that he did. I now feel that I fully understand the form and structure of Blood Brothers. It is a episodic comedy/tragedy that really shows you how tough it was to live as a working class in Thatchers Britain.

Historical Changes to Illnesses and Infections

Historical Changes to Illnesses and InfectionsGeneral introductionE actually individual or human being desires to live a healthy and respectful life. There is an age old saying health is wealth. Every country desires that its subjects remain healthy to keep itself prosperous and progressive. In enmity of the best efforts to achieve this goal, human suffering has become synonymous with the rapid advancements made in technology. It has taken competition to break neck levels and the young generations confine given the health parameters a go by. Commercialization in agriculture has assured in a green revolution, yields commence increase with bioengineered crops but the nutritional components absorb progressively returnd. The current day lifestyle of fast food and non exercise has led to a spurt in non communicable and metabolic associate diseases.1If lifestyle diseases be self created destruct buttons, infections have re ared its head in spite of the best attempts to tackle them. Charles Darwins statement survival of the fittest works competently in this scenario. Microorganisms and parasites are rapidly adapting to new environs with ever increasing reports of drug resistance.1Drug discovery programmes today are not restricted to a single country, so too are the markets. Pharma studys invest heavily in research, but their agenda is mainly commercial. Countries with deep pockets also have extensive budgets with investment in drug research focused to their health care needs. Many drugs in the past are overdue to serendipity, with universities impart substantially. academician involvement is signifi displacet and academic research, however small, can be a contributor to the development of science and beneficial to mankind at large.Introduction to Infections rapid growth in population, especially in the developing countries is leading to challenges in combating infectious diseases. Reports state that there are 17 infectious diseases, which include the int erchangeables of leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria, kala azar etc., to be endemic in 149 countries, with over one billion people being exposed to them. The World Health Organization has raised the ante and has suggested to the various(a) impact countries to be more focused on disease control. Most of these diseases are vector borne or communicable. Climate change has also been a contributing factor in slowing down vector control programmes. Favourable changes in the weather suiting to the growth of vectors have generated new transmission zones with an increased spread of infections.2Tropical countries, including India are prone to certain common infections like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, tuberculosis, leprosy, leishmaniasis, typhoid fever etc. The geographical distribution of some of them is localized depending on the regional climatic conditions. 6,60,000 deaths were describe in 2012 due to malaria of which 95% was in Africa.3 A cohort study by Neeraj Dhingra and c olleagues suggest that the mortality rates of malaria in India are much higher than reported. They attribute this to a similarity of malarial symptoms with other infections like typhoid, ricketsial fever etc., thereby making malaria go unnoticed. Symptomatically similar typhoid has a fatality rate of 2 lakh deaths per division across the globe.4,5Dengue and chikungunya, spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti has been wide spread. Improper sanitation and hygienics has let to their rapid growth and an estimated 2/5th of the worlds population is exposed to them.6 A positive aspect of the WHO report is that the combined efforts of the countries has shown a decreased incidence by 17% and a 26% reduction in morbidity for the period 2000 2010.7There is a lot of concern with rootage to tuberculosis (TB). The World Health Organization in its latest report states that over 8.6 billion people developed tuberculosis in 2012 with 1.3 million TB related deaths.8 Some reports suggest that there are a million missing patients who are actually positive but undiagnosed and one million infected children.9,10 A significant 13% of this infected population were HIV positive. The report also states that India alone accounted for a staggering 26% of the reported cases. The government activity has stressed the need for better diagnostic methods to detect the infection at early stages especially multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Patients with MDR-TB are resistant to the jump line drugs rifampicin and isoniazid.8 The advent of modern techniques like GeneXpert has helped to identify as many as 64,000 cases in India alone.11 Experts believe that TB is a silent epidemic which has mutated very fast in the extend twenty years leading to MDR-TB and extremely drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) with the first case of XDR-TB reported in the year 1997 at Sewri. Even though there are thirteen drugs available in the management of tuberculosis, it is difficult to treat drug resistan t varities.11A Reports of XDR-TB in Africa have been frightening12-13 and according to WHO, accounts for 9.6% of MDR-TB cases. It is now believed that a wrong diagnosis and treatment of XDR-TB as MDR-TB complicates the further treatment. Attempts are being made to develop fixed dose combinations for treatment of TB, especially in children.14 Another mycobacterial infection that prominently bags the headlines is leprosy. 58% of the 2,32,857 leprosy cases reported worldwide were from India. Though there has been a substantial reduction in the matter of cases, there needs to be some more work done till leprosy is completely eradicated.15An area of concern is the development of resistance to antibiotics. This has impeded spheric efforts in containing infections. Higher rising incomes and higher rates of hospitalization have let to the higher use of antibiotics. There is also rampant over the recurrence sales of antibiotics without prescription in many countries including India. Micr oorganisms, when exposed to sub optimal doses of antibiotics develop resistance by undergoing mutations and these strains are increasingly transmitted. Some of the nearly enter drug resistant strains are methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli ST131 and Klebsiella ST258.16 Resistance is more to lactam class of antibiotics, with a 10 fold increased incidence in the last 20 years. The evolution of hospital MRSA was directly attributed to the indiscriminate use of quinolone antibiotics.17 Recently, the gene responsible for resistance in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparam was also identified.18Inflammation19-21Inflammation can be defined as series of pathological changes associated with local vascular reactions and cellular responses of living tissue to an injury insufficient to kill the tissue. It is the bodys defence mechanism in order to eliminate or limit the spread of an injurious agent and is characterized by local heat, redness, s considera blying, pain and loss of function. Depending upon the succession and the mode of on cast, the inflammatory reaction can be classified as acute, sub-acute or chronic.Acute inflammation is characterized by a sudden onset and as a short course which may last for a few minutes to several hours. On the other hand, sub acute inflammation is set to last for one to six weeks or more. Chronic inflammation is known to last for months to years and is characterized by proliferation of connective tissue and blood vessels with presence of lymphocytes, plasma cells and histocytes but absence of polymorphs. Another prominent feature is the denaturation of proteins that occur in the region of inflammation. The root cause for inflammation could be a variety of chemotactic factors which could be any one among the following Membrane derived lipid substances like eicosanoids platelet activating factors, Vasoactive amines, cytokines, lysosomal proteases etc., the most common however being the eicosanoi ds.The arachidonic acid pathway is well known to be the primary mechanism for the generation of pain and inflammation. The arachidonic acid itself is derived from lipid hydrolysates that are supplied from the diet. At the cellular level, the enzyme phospholipase A2 converts the phospholipids to arachidonic acid. This arachidonic acid is acted upon by two major enzyme systems namely lipoxygenases and cyclooxygenases. Together, they regulate various immune defenses and pain mediating responses in the body and maintain homeostasis. The enzymes 5-lipoxygenases and 12-lipoxygenases metabolize the arachidonic acid to various leukotirenes which bring about vasoconstriction and vascular permeability, abet adherence of leucocytes to vascular endothelium and induce bronchial smooth muscle contraction. The role of 5-LOX in inflammation is well established. Modulating the activity of these intermediates has helped in the better management of asthma. The prostaglandins, obtained as the major prod ucts of action of cyclooxygenases on arachidonic acid show significant physiological activity when activated. Thromboxanes help to increase vascular permeability and in the aggregation of platelets, the prostacyclines decrease vascular tone and decrease platelet adhesion, the prostaglandin D2 increases hyperalgesia in sensory likely nerve fibres whereas the prostaglandins E1, E2, F1 F2 are known to increase vascular permeability, increases hyperalgesia in sensory apparent nerve fibres, cause inflammation, reduce gastric acidity. Both isoforms of the enzyme cycloxygenase, namely COX 1 and COX 2 are verbalised in various cells and tissues. It is well established that COX 1 is expressed more in the stomach and prominently involved in the regulation of acid levels, whereas COX 2 is expressed in tissues only during an injury and releases eicosonoids which regulate inflammation. Regulation of COX 2 is therefore a primary focus area in the management of inflammation.Arthritis is a very common occurrence these days. Eating habits and non-exercise have let to obesity. Lack of synovial fluids is known to increase friction resulting in the inflammation of the joints. Patients suffering from arthritis are subject to chronic medication and under such circumstances, patient safety becomes critical. The current strategies of NSAID research are to develop selective COX 2 inhibitors. Drugs like celecoxib, rofecoxib have been introduced in the past for the management of chronic inflammation.Figure 1 Scheme of Arachidonic acid pathwayReactive oxygenated speciesAs reported in the initial part, lifestyle related diseases are quite common. Extremely stressful life and the enormous level of pollution that one is exposed to has affected the health of the common man. Free radicals are extensively produced in the body due to various chemo stimuli. These reactive oxygenated species are known to damage various tissues in the body. The role of antioxidants in scavenging these free radi cals is well known.22The reactive oxygenated species are formed due to different mechanisms which could be due to ionizing radiations, byproducts of cellular respiration or due to defence mechanisms of neutrophils and phagocytes. The electrons lost in electron transport chain attack molecular oxygen to form superoxide ion. These superoxide ions are capable of assail various mitochondrial membranes and fatty acid side chains, thereby damaging them. The body has its own defence against these destructive reactive species like the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalases which salve these radicals. It is also well established now that antioxidants also go a long way in combating this reactive species.23Combating the menace of free radicals is either by legal profession or by scavenging of already existing free radicals. Various enzyme, metals and vitamins work in tandem to remove these reactive oxygenated species.24a) Anti-oxidative enzymes These are superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione reductase. They are synthesized in the body and convert reactive oxygenated species like superoxides and hydroxyperoxides into non-reactive oxygen molecules.b) Metal Chelating antioxidant The role of metal ions in accelerating lipid oxidation is of paramount importance, especially the transition metals like iron and copper. The initiation step of oxygen oxidation requires removal of a hydrogen atom which are catalysed by these metals.c) Singlet oxygen-quenching antioxidants Singlet oxygen is extremely reactive towards any molecule with electron or lone pairs of low ionization energy.d). Radical scavenging antioxidants These can donate hydrogen atoms to free radicals, can scavenge free radicals and prevent lipid oxidation. Photography And Social Networking Media Essay

Photography And Social Networking Media EssayPhoto sharingis the publishing or transfer of a drug physical exertionrsdigital photosonline, thus enabling the exampler to share them with others (publicly or privately). This function is provided through both websites and applications that facilitate the upload and display of images. The term can also be loosely applied to the use of online photo galleries that are set up and managed by individual users, includingphotoblogs. Sharing means that other users can view yet not necessarily transfer the photos, users being able to select different copyright options. The first photo sharing sites originated during the mid to late 1990s primarily from services providing online ordering of prints (photo finishing), alone many to a greater extent came into being during the early 2000s with the goal of providing permanent and centralized doorway to a users photos.Webshots,Yahoo PhotosandFlickrwere among the first. (Warren, 2002)A selfie is a picture that lot interpreted of themselves that would be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other sort of cordial networking website. Since nineteen century, self-portraiture had been so popular. But it is hard for the lower class to get a self-portraiture. proud quality built-in cameras in smartphones and picture-enhancing apps which is easily to access are making selfies a common form of self-expression among social network users nowadays. (Hourihan, 2002)MySpace has received a world-shaking amount of negative attention from the media and many concerned adults, who point to several isolated incidents where predators have contacted, become involved with and even assaulted adolescents whom they met through the popular social networking web site. Furthermore, concerned parents have expressed discontent with the amount and type of personal and private information youth seem to reveal on their write pages. In 2006, the authors performed an extensive content analysis o f approximately 2423 randomly sampled adolescent MySpace profiles, and found that the vast majority of youth were making responsible choices with the information they shared out online. In this follow-up theater, the authors revisited the profiles one year later to examine the extent to which the content had changed. Though exceptions occur, youth are increasingly exercising discretion in posting personal information on MySpace and more youth are limiting access to their profile. Moreover, a significant number of youth appear to be abandoning their profiles or MySpace altogether. (Krishnamurthy, 2002)A recent national survey revealed that 51% of 600 Facebook users are more conscious closely their body image after viewing pictures on the social network fuelling fears that social media can negatively affect users self-esteem. According to Doctor Harry Brandt (2012), claims that Facebook is making it easier for people to spend more time and animation criticizing their own bodies an d wishing they looked alike(p) someone else. Facebook allows us to view our friends pictures and statuses, but this can lead to some of us making unhealthy comparisons between ourselves and others on Facebook. In fact, just over half of the 600 Facebook users surveyed agree that they compare their life to that of their friends when they read status updates and see pictures posted. Doctor Harry Brandt also states that with constant access to the internet it is difficult for people to remove themselves from images and other triggers that lower self-esteem. People make comparisons between themselves and others offline but online we are continually exposed to these images. It probably doesnt function that research shows Facebook users usually post and tag photos of themselves at their best body shape and clothes. The risk is that Facebook is creating an avenue for individuals to compare themselves to others in a detrimental trend and by doing so poses a real threat to their users se lf-esteem.Social network plays a large part in our everyday lives for the majority. the survey showed that 80% of the 600 people surveyed log into Facebook at least once a day. Those who use Facebook frequently are constantly surrounded by images and statuses which could lower their self-esteem. In another study the University of Houston found that there was a link between the amount of time college students spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms. Its not just the amount of time that we spend on using social media that can have an effect on our self-esteem, the number of friends we have on Social media could also have an impact. According to Psychologist Mudra India Muskesh (2000) you should have no more than 354 friends on Facebook. In Mukeshs study those who had just viewed status updates gave themselves lower ratings and those with over 354 friends felt more inadequate in comparison to those with less friends. Is having more friends on Facebook allows people to make more compar isons between themselves and others? Mukesh states that being continually informed of others achievements can make people feel worse about themselves. The supra research has shown that using social networks can affect our self-esteem and suggests theres a correlative relationship. Nevertheless, it isnt clear if social networks are creating new self-esteem issues or infuriating existing ones.Food blogging typically represents a complex interweaving of foodie or gourmet interest in cooking, blog writing and photography. Most food blogs use photos taken by the author and some accounts of food blogging seem to focus on photography in particular Food bloggers tend to write about travel and restaurants as well as publish domestic food diaries and their own recipes (Robinson, 2009).Some also write cook book reviews. Thus five-fold aspects of consumer culture are reflected in writing that draws also on genres from the professional media such as cookery writing, restaurant and book reviewin g and travel writing. Food blogging, like mews blogging, seems to reflect a shift from media consumption to production. (DeSolier, 2006)Food blogging is part of a wider growth in forms of writing about food (Brien, 2007), a field that can be the locus of personal, physical and emotional matters, including concerns about health, well-being and self-esteem and can also engage with global concerns around environmental issues and friendship building (Brien, 2007). However, much blogging about food specifically reflects foodie culture (Watson et al., 2008). Foodies focus on the aesthetic and the sensual appreciation of food as a form of claim to cultural distinction (De Solier, 2006). Thus Watson et al.s (2008) analysis of one food blog sees it as part of the bloggers search for personal significance and individuality through skilled consumption experiences, shared with a community of consumption, other bloggers. Stebbins (2009) recent work has argued that Consumption and leisure have common ground but are separate worlds, here the two merge. Complex, sustained practices around inventing recipes, making food, appreciating the results, writing about food, and taking pictures combine consumer consumption (food, internet use) and a serious leisure pursuit. In Grant McCrackens (1988) terms, photos can be a tool for displacing meanings that are too fragile and tenuous to be contained in the here and now. By instead claiming these identity statements in the there and then of the tourists travels, they become less subject to interrogation and less demanding of verification. Research also find that, despite the tale that the tourist photographer imagines delivering at some future time, these tales wind up being more internal tales told to the self than ever finding an audience outdoors of the immediate family. Our tourist photos are neertheless selectively taken and retained with an intended audience in mind and are a conscious effort to manipulate our self-image (Cra ng, 1999). E-mailed photos as well as photo sharing sites like Flickr and social networking sites, blogs, and web pages may have some greater success in reaching an audience (Schau and Gilly, 2003), and a few of us may also bring selected images to our workplace (Tian and Belk, 2005). According to Rodzvilla (2002) The fact remains that with the ease of taking photos and the mavin of purpose that it gives us to photograph our touristic sights, not to mention the escalating proliferation of photos that result, most of the world will little note, long remember, nor even encounter the self productions we have in mind when we record these images. And as these images become more numerous and more ephemeral in their digital forms, it may well be that we ourselves will never see them again either.

The Beginnings of Coca Cola in America

The Beginnings of coca dope in AmericaThe coca plant genus genus green goddess drink was originally created in Atlanta, USA in 1886 by John Pemberton, the pharmacist and owner of Jacobs Pharmacy. Originally sold in the pharmacy from the soda fountain for 5 cents a glass, and in course unmatchable sales were only 9 glasses a day as compared to 23.7 billion unit cases global in 2008.Only after John Pembertons death, coca dope started its growth. Taken over in 1888 by Asa Griggs Candler, an Atlanta phone lineman, who transformed coca pinhead from an invention into a business and secured the rights. He became the clubs foremost hot seat, and by dint of denote and promotion he introduced the drink to the rest of the United States. By 1895 on that point were trine syrup plants in Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.Through innovation of a bottle, coca plant Cola changed its room of serving the drink from a soda fountain to bottled drink, and in 1916 the contour bottle has been actual and till this day it is the signature shape of coca plant Cola.By 1923 Robert Woodruff has become the new president, and for over 60 years worked hard to introduce coca Cola to the rest of the world.2.2 coca Cola dismission sphericBy 1895 Coca Cola had managed to expand all over the United States and its Territories. Soon after, the company started to set first steps outside its floor country. In 1905 Coca Cola was first bottled in Cuba, Canada and Panama, and the expansion continued rapidly. After World warfare I the company set up 2 bottling plants in France, from which they served the European commercialize. By the 1940s Coca Cola was operating in 44 markets outside the United States and even during the Second World War it continues to expand, as it promise that every man in uniform gets a bottle of Coca Cola for five cents, wherever he is and whatever it costs. As a result Coca Cola spreads its operations to every place where American soldiers were based.Pe ter Dicken says in his book Global Shift that companies need to sustain three characteristics that make them a Transnational Cooperationits ability to coordinate and control various processes and transaction within transnational production networks, both within and amongst different countriesits potential ability to take advantage of geographical differences in the distribution of factors of production networks (for example, natural resources, capital, labour) and in state policies (for example, taxes, trade barriers, subsidies, etc.)its potential geographical flexibility, an ability to switch and re-switch its resources and operations between positions at an external or even a global scale.Comparing Coca Cola at the turn back of World War II with these features, it is certain, that the company does not cover them completely, but it can be said that Coca Cola has already been on the way to match these characteristics, at a time, when the terms of Transnational Cooperation and Gl obalization had not been apply at all. To understand how Coca Cola managed to expand in much(prenominal) a quickly way the organizational structure developments is going to be examined before the companies development towards a TNC is going to be analysed in chapter 3.2.3 The Coca Cola systemA really important step for the Coca Cola Company in their development to a foreign company was the establishment of the first bottling franchise system in 1899, which has contributed significantly to the companys overall success over the past century. Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead signed the first bottling agreement with Asa Candler, president of Coca Cola Company, which gave them exclusive national rights to bottle Coca Cola across most of the United States for the sum of one dollar. By 1916, more than 1,000 Coca Cola bottling plants were operating in the United States, most of them small family-run organizations. In the 1920s and 1930s bottling operations were established ou tside the United States, in just approximatelywhat 44 countries worldwide. Ernest Woodruff, the CEO, was responsible for this international expansion of the todays worlds largest potable company Coca Cola. During World War II, 64 bottling plants were opened around the world to turn in the phalanx and the international expansion of Coca Colas bottling system gained crocked point.Because of the permanently enlarging bottling system and accelerating growth of the companys worldwide business, in the 1970s and 1980s a satisfying bottler consolidation was prerequisite to reduce the number of independent franchise ownerships. With the consolidation of the many small and medium size bottler, the company gained more control over the bottling network. Today there are more than 300 bottling partners worldwide ranging from international and publicity-traded businesses with independent percentage-owner structures to small, family owned operations. In general, the Coca Cola Company owns the brands, is responsible for consumer brand marketing initiatives and produces concentrates, beverage and syrups, which are sold to various authorized bottling operations throughout the world. While the Coca Cola system is not a single entity from a legal or managerial perspective, the sustainable growth of the system as a whole depends on the collaboration, support and shared values and goals of the company and its bottling partners. This unique source of strength of the closely and collaborative relationship between the company and its bottling partners, allows the beverage company to conduct business on a worldwide scale while chill out main(prenominal)taining a topical anaesthetic anesthetic approach. The four most important bottling partners, which make up the worlds largest and most powerful and extensive beverage distribution network, provided the company several benefits including increase geographical reach, increased scale of operations, more coordination of the distribution system and centralized negotiations. Finally this system is a century-old alliance and a key strength of the Coca Cola Company.2.4 Growth strategiesThe recent years and the changing global economic conditions brought about new challenges and opportunities for the Coca Cola Company. In order to discover its market share and keep ahead of innovation the beverage company developed a multi-faceted domestic and global innovation scheme. This growth strategy focuses on strong o rganic fertiliser growth supported by product innovation, geographic expansion, particularly in developing and emerging economies, strategic alliances and acquisitions and joint ventures. This strategy, focusing on organic growth and expansion, was very important for the development to a multinational company and plays overly until the present day and the future an essential role. The key of the success of the worlds largest easygoing drink producer is to reach and meet its long-term targets by growing its existing business. Nevertheless, the company will grow organically as head as through targeted acquisitions, which countenance to be done in a disciplined manner.Coca Cola made already acquisitions around the world in the blend years and will seek more acquisition opportunities in the fast growing soft drink market to expand its revenue sources and its portfolio. This results from recent acquisitions, where Coca Cola has benefited from. These attended boost the companys sales at a time, where traditional change soft drinks experienced sluggish sales. Finally acquisitions strengthened Coca Colas international operations and gave it an opportunity to grow through new product launch or to increase the capacity to penetrate existing international markets and to diversify its revenue stream. other important aspect in an increasingly complex and evolving environment to accelerate sustainable growth for the Coca Cola Company were and still are roast Ventures and Partnerships. Coca Cola has joined forces with a number of well established businesses such as Nestl, PG, Illycaff to further its diversification efforts. These joint ventures allowed Coca Cola to forecast related businesses or new geographic markets, that would be inaccessible without the partner, and to develop new markets of iced tea, coffee and fruit juices. unlessmore it provided the opportunity to gain new scientific skills and knowledge, to gain new capacity and expertise, to access greate r resources and to share risks with the venture partner. thereof international joint ventures were extremely advantageous for Coca Cola.3. Globalization mathematical operation of Coca Cola3.1 Entering new difficult markets The Coca Cola Company in chinaware and Russia3.2 Coca Cola thinking global, acting localBefore to analyse Coca Colas adapting to local demands and unavoidably, the term Glocalization and its importance within the process of Globalization are going to be discussed.3.2.1 Globalization vs. GlocalizationGlobalization is one of the most important phenomena of the recent past and of the future. The term Globalization describes an ongoing process by which regional economies, societies and cultures are becoming more integrated through a dramatically increased global network of technological, economic, political and cultural exchanges. In specialisedally economic contexts, the term refers to the integration of national economies into the international miserliness th rough trade, particularly trade liberalization or free trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration and the spread of technology. This worldwide phenomenon of interaction among the countries is driven largely by advances in communication, transportation and legal infrastructure as well as the political choice of countries to open cross-border links in international trade and finance. callable to many difficulties that a globalization strategy faces another term has developed in recent years called Glocalization. In contrast to globalization, the glocalization strategy, which means thinking globally but acting locally, is a more modern and different approach. The term Glocalization, which had become a buzzword in business world in 2000, describes a historical process whereby the local is integrated into the global. This means that localities develop economic and cultural relationships to the global system through information technologies, bypassing and subverting traditi onal power hierarchies alike(p) national presidential terms and markets including cultures clash with newly introduced cultural concepts, ideologies and practices. So put simply, globalization is a move toward centralization, while glocalization is a move toward decentralization. In this section the concept of glocalization is elaborated. In this context it will be explained why glocalization is important for multinational companies in general and curiously for Coca Cola. Furthermore this section describes which advantages and disadvantages glocalization comprises and how the concept of glocalization is use by Coca Cola in China.3.2.2 Definition of GlocalizationGlocalization is a combination of the words globalization and localization and emphasise the idea that a product or service is developed and distributed globally is more likely to succeed if it is adapted to the specific requirements of local practices, legislation, fiscal regime, socio-political system, cultural expectati ons, local laws, customs and consumer preferences.Today it is potential to understand by glocalization the intelligent adoption of concepts and ideas to the local and regional needs, instead of having exactly the same products and solutions everywhere. The concept of global localization explains the interactions between global and local dimensions in any strategy like political governance strategies, business marketing strategies, media and communication strategies and so on. Glocalization also explains the failure of some strong strategies, as they dont consider the effect of cultural diversity and strength of local dimensions. It is more considered as creation or distribution of products or services intended for a global or trans-regional market, but customized to suit local laws or culture.3.2.3 Multinational Companies and Glocalization, Example Coca ColaThe increasing globalization process has altered the international competitive dynamics in the various industries. The recent c hanges in the global marketplace call for fundamentally different vision and strategic thinking internal all types of companies. The strategy of glocalization is becoming more and more important in all types of businesses in recent years and seems to have received wide acceptance. curiously in the food and agribusiness industry the concept of glocalization is particularly important, because of the seamless challenges this industry faces due to the typical differences that exist in the food and drinking habits of population belonging to various regions, religions and cultures across the globe. Therefore the modifications of the glocalization strategy help consumers in the host country relate with the character in a much let out and trenchant way.In todays highly competitive business life a number of multinational companies currently apply glocalization strategies in an effort to build their customer bases and grow revenues. If multinational companies decide to expand their opera tions to a new country, they have to make a choice between following uniform business strategies as in their home country or modify their strategies to suit the host country socio-economic and political environment.Because most of the time a company, which is doing extremely well in the global market or their home market, can fail completely in their local market or vice versa due to the paradox of not being able to adapt to the local conditions, which is one of the highest priorities for successful global companies. In order to operate successfully in their host countries, multinational companies must adopt glocal strategies in marketing, product development, advertisement etc. Therefore the companies try to be both local and global, boastful and small, centralized and decentralized, stable and dynamic. The main objective of these companies is to simultaneously offer standardized mass manufacturing, customized mass manufacturing and individually designed goods and services. To tac kle this growing dilemma and for corporation success it is essential to maintain an appropriate balance between global homogenization and local customization. Also the successful global brand like Coca Cola, which has had a global campaign, espouse a glocal strategy. The worlds largest beverage company is the crush example one could cite for a multinational company practising glocalization. The soft drink company stands for global brand, global taste, global communication differentiated with local language. In the 1990s the worldwide business development was changing and the world was demanding a greater flexibility, local responsiveness and local sensitiveness and a desire for local autonomy and preservation of unique cultural individuation appeared. Coca Cola recognized that speed, transparency, local sensitivity and responsibility had become essential to their success. Simultaneously the worlds largest soft drink company realised that a single global strategy and a single globa l campaign wont work in different countries with different cultures in the long term. Therefore it has realised that it is important that they act according to relevant local needs, local tastes and preferences, local laws, local cultures to support global brand strategies. As a result they developed a strategy, allowing differences in packaging, distribution and media for a specific region or country according to its cultural, regional and national uniqueness and which fits within fundamental values, policies and standards of integrity and quality of the company. Coca Cola showed that it is crucial for worldwide business activities to succeed in any foreign country, to understand and respect local culture, history, differences, to adapt to consumer needs, habits and diet, as well as local conditions, characteristics and circumstances of the market. The best example for Coca Colas glocal strategy is China. China was incessantly one of the biggest opportunities of all emerging markets with a huge potential for the Coca Cola Company. When Coca Cola first entered the Chinese market, it faced unusual tasks and success did not occur in the beginning. The reason for that was that Chinese mountain had a historical preference for health-oriented beverages such as green tea and juices and the product was misunderstood by the people. Because of these different tastes and preferences, the Coca Cola Company adopted a glocal strategy. This customer-based strategy was very effective for Coca Cola, because if their brand was not instantly recognizable in a variety of setting or they would have no congruence with local needs it may result in a loss of their brands global image or they could fail to attract potential customers. Coca Cola has overcome this problem in China by creating a glocal strategy, which enabled them to combine the best of global and local marketing to maintain their brand image. This step established a strong sense of cultural congruence with a strong foc us on social responsibility. For Coca Cola this was a really important step, because also brinking habits transform significantly across cultures and countries like in the food industry. Therefore the Coca Cola Company has to be particularly sensitive to various cultural and religious issues because challenges faced in this industry due to the cultural differences are more critical and complex as compared to the other industries. This effective long-term business strategy of glocalizing allowed most decisions regarding developing new drinks and approving local initiatives to be determined by local subsidiaries or distributors and to establish nationwide operations, which generated a strong market presence. Coca Cola developed with this strategy a world, where local body politics benefit from global resources while they are retaining their own cultural identities. In the meanwhile China is not the only country for which it has adopted a glocal strategy. Over the last decade it has ta ken up this approach around the world, but especially for the Asiatic countries, because of their diversity of cultures, which does not provide a unified consumer base. This section explained that glocalization explores both the effective expansion of transnational companies into new markets and the ability of cultures to exert their own identity in their interplay with the global scenario. It also showed that going global might not take much effort, but going glocal means a lot of responsibility. Therefore it is important to consider glocalization in expansion plans or when a company decides to launch in different locations, because it plays an important role if a company operates successfully or not.Summarized, it is possible to understand by glocalization a global decision, which has local impact and, at the same time, it can be a local instance with global effect. So, it can be said that glocalization represents the need for multinationals to be global and local at the same tim e.3.2.4 A glocal strategy Coca Cola wants to by HuiyuanIt has been shown that Coca Cola always tried and tries to adapt to any changes in the consumers habits and demands. Therefore it changed its range of products, either by the invention of new product lines or through acquisition of other beverage brands and companies. The consumers preferences and demands of beverages in the Chinese market experienced a significant change in recent years. Whereas the demand of carbonated drinks stagnated, the demand of non-carbonated drinks such as teas and especially juices increased dramatically. Therefore Coca Cola introduced a couple of new drinks of these sorts. In 2008, however, Coca Cola resolved to strengthen its position in the Chinese beverage market through the acquisition of the Huiyuan Group, the biggest producer and distributor of juices in China with a market share of nearly 50%. The company had been extraordinary interesting for Coca Cola, as it is not only well known and has a s trong position in the Chinese market but also because of its very strong bases of raw stuff and nonsenses and a good production and distribution infrastructure all over the country. Coca Cola expected to strengthen its position in the Chinese and also in the international beverage market through this acquisition and therefore was instinctive to buy Huiyuan Group at an extraordinary high price. In fact, Coca Cola offered to buy the company at a price nearly three times higher than its actual stock market value at the time.Furthermore Coca Cola was willing to put Zhi Xiuli, the chairman and a big shareholder of Huiyuan at the top of the merged company and thereby increasing its Guanxi and secure its position in Chinese business.By the end of 2008, the deal seemed to be home and dry, as all shareholders of Huiyuan Group to sell their shares. Therefore, Coca Cola only needed to the allowance of the Chinese authorities to take over the juice manufacturer. But the Chinese government impo sed the Anti-Monopoly-Law in August 2008 which made all acquisitions of Chinese companies by multinational corporations subject to stringent checks, as the government saw it as a risk to the national economic security. After a couple of month of investigations and negotiations the Chinese government finally rejected Coca Cola to take over Huiyuan, as it suspected Coca Cola to reach a market controlling position, which would harm the Chinese economy. Critics accused the Chinese authorities to block this merger due to national sentiments and therefore act not in accordance with the rules of the World Trade Organisation, whose member China is since 2001. two companies, Coca Cola and Huiyuan, however accepted the Governments decision and did not try to act against it. This shows that in the politically controlled Chinese market it is still important to always try to collaborate with the authorities and never try to act against them, for example by going to court what would probably had happened in most other country, if the company had been confronted with such a decision. It also showed that the Chinese government, because of the size, potential and attractiveness of its economy has a lot of power and does not risk big conflict internationally by acting this way.3.2.5 Advantages and Disadvantages of GlocalizationIn this section the advantages as well as disadvantages of glocalization will be identified and described. First of all glocalization makes sense when a sloshed faces high pressure for local responsiveness and where there are significant opportunities for leveraging valuable skills within a multinationals global network of operations. Through glocalization international products are adapted to the local taste of the population and thereby local communities are introduced to different aspects of foreign cultures. This helps multinational companies to grow and gain trust of the people of particular regions. So, glocalization helps in connecting with the co nsumers of that region on an emotional level and also leverage its global position. This is the most important aspect that leads to success of the company. Another convinced(p) aspect of glocalization is that multinational companies bring in foreign revenue and offer employment opportunities for locals. Disadvantages of this strategy can be that companies are unable to realize location economies or failure to transfer core competencies to foreign markets. Another disadvantage is that it is really difficult to implement a glocal strategy due to organizational problems. This means that glocalization doesnt always benefit multinational companies because individuals and groups in each region or country can choose to accept or reject the products offerings or the companys presence.3.3 develop a global trade mark3.4 Coca Cola using natural resourcesAn important question that Coca Cola faces every day, regards natural resources and the environment, especially wet and its tradition. Wat er is an essential ingredient for the beverage business. In 2005, Coca Cola used 290 billion litres of weewee in its plants to manufacture its products, 40% of it was used to make drinks and 60% was consumed in the publish chain and for the production of sugar and corn.3.4.1 Handle resources sustainablyCoca Colas efforts to reduce and to remedy the efficiency of its piddle consumption have increased since the 2000s. Indeed there have been often of global initiatives that Coca Cola has undertaken to hit this mark. With regard to that, Coca Colas chairman and CEO said that Coca Colas purpose is to return every drop of piddle that the company consumes, by recycling water used for production processes. Moreover the company supports initiatives of water supply in developing countries and to protect the environment through local projects.Coca Cola was blamed, in less developed countries, of draining the underground water and of discharging improperly treated industrial wastewater. T he most difficult situation is in India, in the Kerala district, where the company was accused to extract 15 millions litres of groundwater everyday, without any expense. Another important commission against Coca Cola India is that its bottle washing plants used chemicals in their processes, and produced effluents that, according with local residents, were discharging before any kind of treatment. Moreover, some reports estimated that, in 2004, Coca Cola India used 283 billions litres of water, which corresponded to the worlds drill of water for about ten days, and that Coca Cola utilized 2.7 litres of water for each bottle of its drink and 1.7 litres of them were released as effluent. In the year 2002, the company undertook its water sustainability projects to supply communities of developing countries, which lived in zones near its bottling factories, with potable water. Especially for India, the company, in June 2002, was participating in many rainwater harvesting initiatives, with the help of many non-governmental organizations, central authorities, state groundwater committees and welfare standstills.Additionally, in 2004, Coca Cola undertook the global water initiative, with which it not only had the goal of the containment of its water use, but also the purpose of finding and developing some sustainable solutions to water resources commission. Coca Cola tested 840 areas around the world to understand the problem of global water shortage, since this resource is its most important ingredient and the company wants to sustain this resource to be able to continue its business.Coca Cola aspired to improve its usage of water in its production processes in association with local governments, authorities and communities in many developing countries. With regard to Africa, Coca Cola established an association with the US Agency for International Developments (USAID) and they started, in 2007, 9 water initiatives with an investment of US$ 7 millions. The proje cts aim was the enhancement of the quality of water and a basic supply of fresh water and sanitation to communities without these basic services, for example in Kenya, Tanzania, Angola and Uganda. In Europe, Coca Cola cooperated with the United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) and thereby invested US$ 7 million into a project to improve water supply in the less developed areas of Croatia, Kazakhstan, Romania and Turkey. In China the company undertook a rainwater harvesting initiative, with the association of Soong Ching Ling, to provide and improve a healthy access to potable water for about 3000 inhabitant. Furthermore it supported the development of 27 equipments for harvesting rainwater and water storage in five small towns. In India, Coca Cola together with the government built about 300 rainwater gathering systems to improve the water storage. Finally, In Mexico Coca Cola took initiative to improve re-use and water supply facilities for its own usage. Furthermore it supporte d reforestation programs and the restoration of 25,000 hectares of forest.3.4.2 Strategies for sustainable usage of water resourcesIn 2007, Coca Cola undertook a water stewardship strategy that is composed by four key points plant performance, watershed protection, community water initiatives and global awareness action.About the plant performance, Coca Cola has tried to increase the efficiency of its plants with regard to water consumption, creating an interactive water resource management toolkit to help bottling companies to enhance their efficiency in the use of water. In fact, in 6 years from 2002 to 2007, the companys system had improved its water usage efficiency by 21%. But its water consumption had gone up by 4%, in 2007, because it had launched new products such as tea and coffee. The second area of the strategy is the watershed protection Coca Cola, with the association of governments, NGOs and many communities, works to educate developing countries and its bottling facto ries about the importance of maintaining watershed. This programme involved also some investments to promote water conservation in seven river systems in China, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and East Africa. The community water initiatives involved partnerships with 70 communities in about 40 nations. These partnerships aimed sanitation, hygiene, watershed protection, water providing, efficient water usage and education and awareness. Additionally, Coca Cola participated in some projects with regard to reforestation, efficient usage of water in agriculture and rainwater gathering, especially in India. Finally, the last core area of the strategy is the global awareness action, with which Coca Cola developed a programme which had the purpose to provide healthy and potable water to schools in developing countries. This project involved the education of students, in many schools, about sanitation and hygiene.3.4.3 Criticism on Coca Cola and its responsesIn spite of several initiatives, partnerships and programmes about water consumption efficiency, Coca Cola had to face lots of criticisms for its business. The most important criticisms focused on the reduction of groundwater tables and on the fact that the local communities were without access to potable water due to the company, particularly in India.Further complaints against Coca Cola were about the discharge of wastewater in the agriculture fields close to its blottling companies, the illegal seizure of lands from agricultural laborers and the release of dangerous material and sludge in the contiguous areas in India. The responses of Coca Cola against these criticisms have been constant since the 2000s. First of all, the company launched a website, called www.cokefacts.org, where it has tried to fight the allegations linked to its business. Moreover, Coca Cola defended itself with the publication of reports and the conduction of studies. For example, the Palakkad District Environmental Protection Council and Gu idance Society prepared in 2002 a report wherein they concluded that the Coca Cola plants had not had any kind of responsibility for any environmental damage that happened in zones near to them. In response to the compl
